In the early part of the twentieth century, ethnographer Edward Curtis travelled the United States, recording in photographs the lives and customs of native peoples. Although mostly straightforward in nature, some of his portraits seem to look deeper and more intimately at his subject. It is amazing to me how contemporary many of these faces appear. This series, focusing on women and girls, is inspired by some of these photographs (all in the public domain).
